Frequently Asked Questions

What are your worship services like?

At Hiss Church, we believe that worship is a time when we can experience the very presence and power of God. God is love! God cares about you! God cares about the world! No matter what the style of our worship, we know that God is present whenever we call God's name.

We have three worship services on Sunday morning, at 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00. All three services are held in our sanctuary.
  • The 8:00 am service has a traditional - informal format, with piano music and vocal solos and communion twice a month.
  • The 9:30 am service has a contemporary format, with contemporary praise music and drums and an informal worship style.
  • The 11:00 am service has a traditional format, with a traditional liturgy, choirs, handbells, and lots of beautiful organ and piano music.
You should receive a printed bulletin with announcements at all services. At the 8:00 am and 11:00 am service, you should also receive a printed order of worship with prayers and hymn numbers. At the 9:30 am service, all of the worship instructions will be announced or displayed on the video screen.

Is there a Sunday School for children?

Yes! It is held during the 9:30 am worship service. The children worship with their parents during the first few praise songs, then they are welcome to go to Sunday School. Their parents can pick them up in their Sunday School classrooms at the end of the worship service. All Sunday School teachers and youth leaders have been given a background check according to our Safe Sanctuaries policy.

Do you have childcare for infants?

Yes! Childcare is offered during both the 9:30 am and 11:00 am worship services. The nursery is located on the second floor of the education building. Parents are given pagers to hold in case they are needed in the nursery. All nursery workers have been given a criminal background check according to our Safe Sanctuaries policy.

If I am visiting, is anybody going to make me stand up and introduce myself?

No. Although we are happy to see you, we respect your privacy and want you to get accustomed to us on your own terms and your own schedule. We may, however, seek you out before or after the service to welcome you informally and warmly!

What should I wear?

There is no dress code at any of our services. Please come as you are. We'll be glad to see you!

May I take communion?

Absolutely. The Lord's table is open to all who love Jesus or want to love Him more, including children.

Do you have missions programs?

Yes. You can serve God and God's neediest people together with us in both local and international missions. See our missions page for more information.

The church is made up of 4 connected buildings, 3 of which face Harford Road, and 1 of which (the historic chapel) is in the back facing the cemetery. From Harford Road, the sanctuary is the building on the left (pictured above), the social hall and auditorium are in the building in the middle (which is set back from the road), and the meeting rooms and offices are in the building on the right.

Where do I park?

There are 2 parking lots, the "upper" or northern lot, closest to Putty Hill Avenue, and the "lower" or southern lot, closest to Hiss Avenue. You may park in either lot. The sanctuary is closest to the lower lot, and the education building and offices are closer to the upper lot. You may park wherever there is room. There are several handicapped spaces in both lots on the Harford Road side. If you need special assistance, someone may drive into the circle, let you out right in front of the handicapped entrance, then park in either parking lot.

Is the building accessible to the physically disabled?

The sanctuary, fellowship hall, and first floor education building rooms are completely accessible. There is a handicapped accessible ramp leading into the middle building at the far left of the open area between the three larger buildings. There is a lift between the sanctuary level and the fellowship hall and education building level. There are two new accessible bathrooms on the first floor of the education building. The second and third floors of the fellowship hall and education building can be reached only by climbing stairs.

What if I am deaf or hard of hearing?

  • We have an ASL interpreter during the 9:30 worship service. In addition to worship, ASL interpreters may be available upon request for other church activities.
  • We have personal assistive listening devices (small, personal amplifiers connected to the sound system) available from the ushers or greeters. Just ask!
  • At the 9:30 am service, we also project many of the words spoken and sung on a large video screen.

What if I have trouble seeing?
  • Large print bulletins are available at the 8:00 am and 11:00 am worship services (if you can, please call the church office in advance to make sure there are enough for everyone).
  • At the 9:30 am service, many of the words are projected on a large video screen.

How do I get to the church office during the week?

The church office is on the second floor of the education building. You may come to the main entrance, which is at the far right of the open area between the three buildings. Please follow the directions for remote entry. If you are unable to climb the stairs, please let the office know, and someone will come to you.

How can I get to know other people?

By saying hello! We try our best to welcome new guests, but we also encourage you to reach out and meet others. We invite you to come to the Son's Spot, which is open from 9:00 am to 11:00 pm in the fellowship hall, get something to eat or drink, and visit for a while. We also invite you to become part of a small fellowship/growth group; several of these are ongoing, while others are short-term. We especially encourage you to volunteer for a special event or join us in a mission project; they are great ways to meet new people, while making a difference at the same time.
