Hiss Memorial Church started about 1839. The Ladies Bible Class had its beginnings some 90 years later. About 1924, Mrs. Evans, wife of the pastor at that time, started an Adult Bible Class in a shed sheltering the horses for the congregation. The class later moved to the chapel to meet.
In 1939, the men and women of the class separated. The ladies still met in the chapel. The men met in the church sanctuary. Then, in 1947, the ladies relinquished their meeting room to the cradle roll and joined the Men’s Class in the church for a number of years.
The ladies gave many dollars to different events. They gave a spoon to new babies born to members of the church, monies for the upkeep of the kitchen, Christmas baskets for Kelso and Strawbridge Homes, etc.. Many parties were held: such as for birthdays, picnics, oyster dinners, talent shows, etc..
In 1948, the Sunshine Box was started. We still have the Sunshine Collection to take little gifts to our shut-ins.
As time went on, we had over 100 member that attended the Ladies Bible Class. At one time in 1971, there were 136 names on the roster.
As years went by and the world became a different place, families moved and sports have taken over much time. Of course, the ladies don’t get any younger and many have met their maker. Attendance has dropped off considerably.
The same thing happened to the Friendly Men’s Bible Class. They were invited to join the Ladies Bible Class in June 2011. They took up the offer so we are now the “Ladies and Men’s Bible Class.” There are five regular members from the Men’s Class. We have 20 members on the roll and average 16 on each Sunday morning. We are so blessed to have a wonderful teacher, Debby Long. The class still gives to missions and Wesley Theological Seminary, the Church of the Deaf, the Salvation Army, the Maryland School for the Blind, the Maryland Bible Society and many others that ask.
Anyone interested in spending an extra hour each Sunday to hear God’s message and sing his praises. We are always looking for new members. Can you ever know too much about God or the Bible? Come and express your views. It’s not all “Teacher Talk.” We meet in room 104, from 9:30 am—10:30 am on Sunday mornings. Come join us, you’ll be glad you did.
