Ladies and Men’s Bible Class 1924-2019 95 Years Old
Hiss Memorial Church started about 1839. The Ladies Bible Class had its beginnings some 90 years later after the start of Hiss UMC. About 1924, Mrs Evans, wife of the pastor at that time, started as an Adult Bible Class in a shed sheltering the horses for the congregation. The class later moved to the chapel to meet. In 1939, the men and women of the class separated. The ladies still met in the chapel. The men met in the church sanctuary. Then, in 1947, the ladies relinquished their meeting room to the cradle roll and joined the Men’s Class in the church for a number of years. Later on the group got so large they divided into their own class again. At one time the Men’s Bible Class had 100 members. In 1971 there were 136 on the Ladies Bible Class roster. As years went by and the world became a different place, families moved, sports and other activities of our members have taken over much time. Of course, the ladies don’t get any younger and many have met their maker. Attendance has dropped off considerably. The same thing happened to the Friendly Men’s Bible Class. They were invited to join the Ladies’ Bible Class in June 2011. Some men chose to join the class, now known as “Ladies’ and Men’s Bible Class.” The class has gotten much smaller and we are all getting up in years. Attendance has dropped off; so on March 10th we voted to discontinue the class as of March 24th. Thus, the Ladies and Men’s Class has closed it’s doors after 95 years. We praise and thank the Lord for giving us so many years.
Our class has given many dollars to different needs and events through the years. Christ U. M. Church of the Deaf Md. Bible Society Md.
